Police responded to a firearm incident near Ōpōtiki on Saturday night.

A man was spotted about 6pm wandering near State Highway 2 close to the town holding a firearm, police said.

The firearm was not discharged.

However, as a precaution armed police attended the incident.

The small, eastern Bay of Plenty town has seen a brief increase in both police and gang presence as a consequence of the death and tangi of Mongrel Mob Barbarians president Steven Taiatini.
