A busy Auckland street has been brought to a standstill after a “potential hazardous material containment incident”.

According to Auckland Transport, Anzac Avenue in Tāmaki Makaurau is closed while emergency services attend to the incident.

Fire and Emergency NZ said they were called to an address on Anzac Avenue at about 4.45pm after reports of “a petrol-like smell”.

Eight fire crews were still at the address at 6.20pm, a spokesperson said.

”The main building has been evacuated while the teams on the ground work to identify the smell.

”They’re still in the early stages of investigating,” they said.

More to come.
