Despite launching a week into June, Love Island is boasting the best ratings on TVNZ+ for the past month.
Love’s on the brain for Kiwis as TVNZ reveals the ratings for Love Island UK have crushed mainstay shows MasterChef and Shortland Street to become the most popular show in June.
The UK dating competition returned to TVNZ in 2023 following a five year hiatus. Since dropping on June 7, it has already soared to become the top show on the state-owned broadcasters’ streaming service TVNZ+.
A statement released by TVNZ showed the reality series has already delivered 1.86 million streams in the last four weeks, and has “earned its place as the number one show for 18-34 year olds, who make up 60% of the shows total audience”.
The ever-popular Shortland Street, following its mid-year cliffhanger, clocked in 1.68 million streams for June.
Meanwhile, MasterChef Australia: Secrets and Surprises, which launched on May 14, has generated 1.28 million streams this month.
Filmed in Mallorca, Spain, the tenth season of Love Island UK is hosted by UK presenter and DJ Maya Jama, with narration by Scottish comedian Iain Stirling.

Over the course of 50 episodes, the contestants – known as “Islanders” – are challenged to find true love by coupling up together, and survive to the series’ final week when a public vote decides which pair will be crowned the winners and take home £50,000 in prize money.
The show has faced waves fo criticism in the past for issues with racism, sexism, ageism, fatphobia, and heteronormativity.
In January, The Guardian reported contestants on the reality series had been asked to suspend their social media accounts as protection from the “adverse effects of social media”.
