A mysterious woman, wearing a mask and large brimmed hat, has been dropping USB flash drives to southern businesses, alongside a cryptic note.
The woman visited dozens of Invercargill businesses on Friday to drop off envelopes containing the USB sticks and a note warning people to “protect your country”.
It is understood she was trespassed from Invercargill Airport after people raised concerns about her handing out envelopes.
Geoff Hinton, technical director of Focus Technology Group, said the woman asked front counter staff at his business to read the details inside the envelope ‘’and protect their family’’.

The handwritten note said: ‘’Please protect your country and its people (important)’’.
“Taxpayers and university students should know the truth, as it can help protect your family and your safety. Please do not pass this to Chinese individuals.”

The cryptic note passed to Invercargill businesses.
Hinton said the woman, who was pulling a trolley bag, spoke with an accent but apart from that ‘’there were no identifiable features at all’’.
Hinton had heard from another Invercargill business that the USB flash drive contained ‘’propaganda documents’’. Hinton, an IT expert, urged other businesses not to insert it into any devices as it may contain computer viruses.
’’You just shouldn’t go there.’’
