Firefighters battled a “well ablaze” house fire in Bell Block, New Plymouth on Saturday afternoon.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) responded to reports of the blaze at 3.24pm and sent two appliances from New Plymouth station and one from Waitara volunteer fire station.

Upon arrival the house was “well ablaze” and as a precaution police and Hato Hone St John were called to the scene after initial reports suggested not everybody was accounted for, a FENZ spokesperson said.

At 4.30pm, the three fire crews were still at the scene dampening down hotspots and going into overhaul mode. The fire had mainly been extinguished.

Every occupant of the house was accounted for and there were no reports of injuries, the spokesperson said.

This is the second house fire to happen on Saturday after firefighters responded to another well-involved house fire on Lemon St at 2am.

Earlier today senior station officer, Jason Crowe, said now was the time for people to check they have working smoke alarms, as a fire can turn deadly in minutes.
