As communications slowly return to areas hit by Cyclone Gabrielle, police are urging affected people to register that they are safe online.

There were 5608 reports of “uncontactable” people registered and 1196 reports from people registering that they are safe as of 2pm on Saturday.

People who have not yet reported themselves as safe should do so via the online form established by police “Registering I’m Alive”.

Those looking to make contact with someone following the cyclone are encouraged to make a Person Inquired For report.

People who have been in touch with someone previously reported uncontactable are urged to update their report via the same link.

More than 100 police officers are working to reconcile reports of uncontactable people with those who have reported themselves safe online and through evacuation centres and police stations.

The death toll of Cyclone Gabrielle sits at nine, but officials have grave concerns for about 10 other people who remain unaccounted for.
