Emergency services were called to a remote section of State Highway 7 in rural Canterbury after a crash left a person trapped in a car.

A person was left trapped in a car and seriously injured after two vehicles crashed on a remote stretch of a state highway in rural Canterbury.

Emergency services were called to the junction of Mouse Point Rd – State Highway 7 – and Leslie Hills Rd in the Hurunui District just after 8am on Friday.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said the trapped person was cut free from the vehicle.

Police and ambulance services were also sent to the scene.

The road was closed between SH7A – the junction for Hanmer Springs – and Leslie Hills Rd, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency said, and drivers were urged to avoid the area or expect delays.

Another vehicle was involved in a crash earlier on the same stretch of the state highway in the morning, closer to Culverden.
