The spark, during home renovations on the house in Kitchener St, led to smouldering.

It was luck that saved a Whanganui home after a spark in the roof almost led to disaster.

The spark, during home renovations on the house in Kitchener St, led to smouldering, leaving the renovators fearing for the house, Whanganui Fire Station senior station officer Jason Hamlin said.

The smouldering became flames, spreading down a wall.

Hamlin said the renovators noticed the fire and jumped into action.

Grabbing the garden hose, they sprayed the fire until there was no smoke left.

Hamlin and his crew arrived at the residence just before 6pm on Wednesday to help ensure the fire was fully out.

They gave the house a once-over to ensure there were no hidden smouldering remains waiting to reignite.

Hamlin said there was minimal damage to the property, but if it hadn’t been caught when it had, it could have been a lot worse.

He acknowledged there were no smoke alarms in the home because it was under renovations, but reinforced their importance.

Fires are four times more likely to kill people if houses don’t have smoke alarms. Death can happen in under three minutes, Fire and Emergency resources said.

“It just shows the value of smoke alarms,” Hamlin said.
