Yes there were lots of incredible looks to be seen at the Met Gala in New York this week. But that wasn’t the only place strong fashion was served up.

At dinners in London, fundraisers in Washington DC and strikes in Los Angeles, other outfits shone too. Here are the ones that caught our attention, away from the Met Gala red carpet…

Best in blue

I’d never paid attention to Kaley Cuoco until The Flight Attendant, but she’s so good in it (her wardrobe is exceptional too) that I now stan. Here she’s supporting her husband who appears in the new HBO show Love and Death (starring Elizabeth Olsen, this is the second telling of the story of Candy Montgomery who murders her friend with an axe, the first, Candy starred Jessica Biel and Melanie Lynskey).

Anyway back to Kaley: I love a voluminous dress, pockets and colour so this Stella McCartney shift is ticking all my happy boxes. – Rebecca Wadey

Best bow

Big bows are big news right now, but this might be the biggest yet, adorning the back of Priyanka Chopra’s epic gown by Nina Ricci. This is almost like a caricature of a gown, with its dramatic bow and exaggerated mermaid tail hem, but the icy colour and simple hair and makeup keep it from being too costumey.

This could easily have been worn to the Met Gala earlier this week, but instead she chose it for a premiere of her new rom-com Love Again. – Zoe Walker Ahwa

Best beat

I’m not the only one who was bummed not to see Julia Fox at the Met Gala – but that doesn’t mean she’s been quiet on the fashion front this week. She’s been busy in her ‘politician era’ attending events like the White House Correspondents Association Dinner in Washington DC with her pal Rosario Dawson.

The event recognises excellence in journalism, and raises funds for political journalists and emerging reporters who cover the President of the United States – which Fox knows do undervalued yet essential work, especially leading up to an election year!

This incredible corseted dress by Annakiki is giving Black Swan from Gotham, and the leather jacket handbag means business. But what really stopped me scrolling in my tracks was the beat – she did it herself, of course – the white foundation, swooping graphic eye and a lip shape I have never seen before, which reminds me of the Batman logo. – Lara Daly

Best Y2K

In a week of overly deferential celebrity homage outfits, I liked the un-seriousness of Maya Jama wearing this denim dress to a fancy dinner in London. Intentionally or not, it instantly brought to mind Britney Spears’ denim look at 2001 American Music Awards.

Though I must ask you to join me in asking the fashion gods to please not bring dirty denim washes back. Let the Joe Dirt look rest in peace. – Tyson Beckett

Best dress you can buy

Fearne Cotton is not someone who’s ever been on my style radar, but her groovy dress caught my eye this week – particularly following the uptight extravagance of all those Met Gala looks. It’s a little retro, with its one-shouldered shape, draped georgette fabric and oceanic print, and very wearable too. It’s by Rixo, a brand known for its prints, and you can buy it here. – ZWA

Best NY chic

Perennial favourite Natasha Lyonne was a glaring omission from the Met Gala carpet and one of the names I’d been hoping to see there. Especially after this exceptional look earlier in the week, from the Time 100 party also held in NY.

The dress is by ultra-cool NY label Area and is in equal parts glam (plunging, sparkling, oyster-shaped breastplates) and comfortable. Natasha wears clothes so effortlessly, her outfits never wear her. We also all know she’d be one of the best people to be stuck at a table with at a gala dinner; she’d care not for proceedings and regale you with brilliant stories all night long. – RW

Best ally

Proving she is just as stylish off the red carpet, Lyonne was also spotted in this incredibly cool outfit on the picket line outside the Paramount offices in Los Angeles during the WGA strike. Union solidarity and Natasha Lyonne, both are always in fashion. – TB
