One person is in critical condition after a truck and a milk tanker collided near Balclutha.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Black Bridge Rd and State Highway 1 about 22 kilometres west of Balclutha at about 5.40pm on Thursday.

Firefighters arrived to find one person trapped in the truck, Fire and Emergency Southern shift manager Jill Higgison said.

Crews freed the person and assisted police with traffic control, she said.

A police spokesperson said they appeared to be in critical condition.

The road was closed while emergency services continued to work at the scene, the spokesperson said.

Waka Kotahi’s website urged motorists to find an alternative route.

“Southbound traffic should use State Highway 1, turn left onto Waiwera Station Rd, turn right on to Anderson Rd, turn right on to Hillfoot Rd, then left back on to SH1 at Clinton.

“Reverse for northbound traffic.”
