All Whites keeper helps minnows Grimsby Town stun Premier League side in FA Cup

Overcome with joy, New Zealand goalkeeper Max Crocombe dropped to his knees when the fulltime whistle sounded after helping League Two minnows Grimsby Town pull off the shock of the FA Cup fifth round.

With Crocombe in goal, Grimsby beat Premier League club Southampton – a club ranked 64 places above them – 2-1 to secure a place in the quarterfinals for the first time since 1939.

Irish midfielder Gavan Holahan held his composure to convert two penalties, one either side of halftime, while Crocombe made three saves to keep Southampton at bay after they pulled one goal back through Duje Caleta Car.

By beating Southampton, Grimsby, who sit 16th in the fourth-tier League Two after eliminating Wrexham to earn promotion out of the National League last season, became the first club in FA Cup history to knock out five teams from a higher division in a single campaign.
