Local information helped police stop a man with an illegal firearm and drugs in his vehicle.

The assistance of Ashburton residents helped police stop an alleged drug dealer in his tracks.

A 43-year-old man is facing several charges, including unlawful possession and carrying of a firearm, at the Christchurch High Court on Saturday.

Tips from the public led to a police stop of his vehicle in Ashburton the previous night, according to a police media statement.

In the vehicle was a firearm he illegally possessed, 240 grams of methamphetamine, LSD, ecstasy and 50g of cannabis. The quality of drugs led to charges of possession for supply.
