Holly Huddleston has made history with a hat-trick for the Hearts in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield.
The former White Ferns seamer on Saturday became the first woman to ever achieve the feat for Auckland in any white-ball format, firing her bottom-of-the-table side to a 65-run win over the Otago Sparks in the national one-day competition.
The 35-year-old, who played 36 ODIs and 16 T20s for New Zealand between 2014 and 2020, capped off a brilliant all-round day at Dunedin’s University of Otago Oval, as she registered just the sixth hat-trick in New Zealand women’s List A cricket.
Having earlier whacked an unbeaten 49 off 38 balls to second top-score behind Katie Perkins (113 not out off 123) in the visitors’ 308-5 after they won the toss, Huddleston then got down to business with the ball.

Opening the bowling, the right-armer had early success in having Bella James out hooking, then in her penultimate over – the 43rd of the chase, with Otago 224-5 – she ensured victory for the Hearts with her heroics.
Fourth ball of the over she rattled Emma Black’s stumps with a full-toss, then followed that up next ball by having Fran Wilson caught by Bree Illing at mid-on.
Then, with the hat-trick nut it was Gemma Adams who fell victim, chipping to Bella Armstrong at mid-wicket, as Huddleston then raised her arms in triumph and was mobbed by her jubilant team-mates.
She went on to finish with figures of 4-49 off 10 overs, as the Sparks fell to 243 all out in 46.4 overs, which meant the Hearts also collected a bonus-point with their win.
In the day’s other matches, the Canterbury Magicians beat the Central Hinds by 21 runs at Satterthwaite Oval in Christchurch (Hagley Oval having been temporarily renamed in honour of Canterbury all-time great Amy Satterthwaite’s last two 50-over matches at her home ground this weekend), and the Wellington Blaze maintained their spot at the top of the table with a 19-run win over Northern Districts at the Hutt Recreation Ground in Lower Hutt.
The teams all square off again on Sunday at the same venues.
