A man is in hospital after being critically injured in an assault in Whanganui.
Police found the man on the corner of St Hill and Ridgway streets in Whanganui about 2.15am on Sunday, a police spokesperson said.
He was taken to hospital in a critical condition, she said.
Officers were working to determine the circumstances of the assault and were appealing to the community for help.
