Ruben Love has recommitted his future to the Hurricanes for two more Super Rugby Pacific seasons.
The 22-year-old is yet to feature this term having been sidelined with a groin issue. But the Hurricanes are keen to keep the young fullback in the capital for the long-term.
Love has played 16 times for the Hurricanes sine making his debut against the Highlanders in 2021 and starred for the Wellington Lions as they won the NPC title last year, ending a 22-year drought.
He has also represented the Māori All Blacks and was called up to the All Black XV squad for their tour of Europe last year.
“Being injured this season has put a lot of things into perspective for me and whilst I’ve been rehabbing my groin, I have received a lot of āwhina and tautoko from the Hurricanes players, staff and fan base, which I am incredibly grateful for,” Love said.
“I am more motivated than ever to contribute to this club and I look forward to being back on the field for the Canes in 2024.”
The son of Matene Love, the former Māori All Black , Love was a talented cricketer and turned out for both the New Zealand Under-19 cricket and the New Zealand Schools’ Rugby teams in 2019.
But with the guidance of his father, Love chose to pursue a career in rugby and linked up with the Lions in 2020, scoring a try on debut against Bay of Plenty.
His performances in the NPC competition earned him a contract with the Hurricanes, for whom he was a standout performer last season.
Outgoing Hurricanes coach Jason Holland said he was looking forward to Love returning from injury and ws excited to see him develop at the club.
“It’s great to have Ruben recommit for the next two seasons. Ruben is a quality young man who has all the skills, and a huge amount of potential.
“I know he is working hard to get back on the field, and once he does, he’ll add massive value for the Hurricanes.”
