Arthritis can be painful and debilitating, effecting movement of joints.
In spite of all the modern developments in technology and research, pain continues to be one of the most significant problems troubling humanity.
While, we do everything we can to avoid this cruel aspect of life, but we would have trouble living without its essential messages.
The reason is that pain is the body’s way of telling us that something is wrong and needs to be rectified. It indicates the presence of a number of potential causes, one of the most important being arthritis.
In the simplest terms arthritis means the pain is generated by a breakdown in the structures, where bone meets bone in joints, or in the muscles and ligaments that move these structures.

Of course, the reality is that this subject is far more complex with almost 100 different versions of the disease affecting humans and cures and other fixes numbering into the thousands.
In fact, more than one in four people suffer from this crippling ailment.
To assist in explaining some of the complex issues, solutions and ideas about arthritis, new Plymouth Positive Aging, Grey Power, and Age Concern have invited the Taranaki representative of New Zealand Arthritis to speak to a free public forum in the New Plymouth District Council debating chamber on Thursday, May 25.
Georgie-Anne Cox is the full time Arthritis expert in the region, travelling around doing educational and individual consultations to assist anyone who needs assistance.
She will stress the importance of an exercise regime for these and answer whatever questions she gets from the floor.
She will also delve into how people can sort out the various strange pains that they get from those indicating arthritis in its different forms.
They will be aware of the typical examples that are commonly seen amongst older people with thickened joints, not only causing pain but also limiting movement and dexterity.
Many are not aware gout is regarded as a form of arthritis caused by a build-up of uric acid in the blood system that often crystallises in the joints causing acute pain.
This form of arthritis is one often successfully controlled with medication.
Proper diet can play a part, but with other forms of joint pain where the body is capable of rebuilding cushioning material, light cartilage can avoid the need for expensive joint replacement.
So for those looking for answers about this widespread debilitating and overall painful malady, the forum on Thursday is for you.
Arthritis Forum: 9.30am to 11am, New Plymouth District Council Civic Centre, Thursday, May 25. Doors open at 9 am. Tea and coffee provided.
