On Tuesday morning, Tairāwhiti Civil Defence said a number of families had been evacuated or had self-evacuated from Mangapapa.

There was “severe surface flooding” for the whole suburb, Tairāwhiti Civil Defence said in an update on Facebook.

“Heavy rain has caused drains to flood and creeks to rise to about 2 metres.

“Families have either evacuated to the House of Breakthrough on 7 Potae Avenue or with whānau and friends.”

Police were going door to door checking on people on Tuesday morning, advising them over where their evacuation centre was.

Fire and Emergency NZ have closed roads in and around the areas from Lytton High School to Winter St.

“Please keep an eye on water levels and if necessary, evacuate to the House of Breakthrough or relocate with whānau or friends,” Tairāwhiti Civil Defence wrote on Facebook.
