A cold night has seen snow fall on SH1 and SH46, seeing the highways closed. Pictured NZTA live camera on Desert Rd.
Desert Rd, along State Highway 1, and SH46 are closed due to snowy conditions in the area making the roads unsafe.
Waka Kotahi has advised motorists travelling from Rangipo to Waiouru (Desert Rd) and Tongariro to Rangipo to expect delays and detour via SH3, SH4, SH47 or SH41.
The detours will add 1.5 hours to motorists’ journeys.
Waka Kotahi has advised people to drive safe.
The road closures follow a night of snow showers, which MetService expected to develop above 900 meters from midnight on Thursday.
Snow is predicted to accumulate on the roads until 11am.
