Kate Henderson
Kate Henderson says children and guests love spotting all the exotic animals in the wallpaper.
It’s a place we visit several times a day: The smallest room needn’t be dull.
So it was no surprise that we received a slew of photos of beautiful wallpapered powder rooms when we opened up the Resene competition to readers.
The eventual winner, chosen by a panel of interested Homed staffers and Resene marketing manager Karen Warman, is pretty and whimsical.
Warman says she loves the tropical feel of Aucklander Kate Henderson’s toilet room.
Henderson chose an exotic jungle print in Resene Kaleidoscope wallpaper.
“When we renovated our 1940s home I wanted to make the powder room a fun place to be for our small children and guests,” she says.
Warman says Henderson “so cleverly combined her Resene paint and wallpaper choices so that the powder room looks beautifully decorated and balanced”.
“The painted tongue-and-groove panelling helps make the room look more spacious and with the wallpaper above it, it feels like a tropical bathroom you might find at an upmarket hotel on holiday.”
With many others to choose from, the second prize ended up going to Sandra Hansen, who upgraded her “boring white box” powder room under the stairs, using wallpaper from Resene’s Rausch Kimono collection.
“I added the glass basin and open spout tap to further create the idea of a pond,” Hansen says. “The blue grey paint -Resene Half New Denim – adds to the feeling of peaceful contemplation.”
Hansen says she’s extremely happy with the overall result. “It’s in part a tribute to my dad who bred koi fish back in South Africa (and who) sadly passed away in 2021.”
As first prize winner, Henderson will receive:
- A $500 Resene ColorShop voucher to spend on the paint and wallpaper of your choice
- A colour consultation with a Resene Colour Expert, and
- The latest Resene fashion colour and whites and neutrals fandecks (total prize value $700).
Second place getter Hansen wins:
- A $300 Resene ColorShop voucher to spend on the paint and wallpaper of your choice
- A colour consultation with a Resene Colour Expert
- And the latest Resene fashion colour and whites and neutrals fandecks (total prize value $500).

Anna Ward
Christchurch resident Anna Ward had to have this paper as it reminded her of the movie A Fish Named Wanda, “and then I thought about all the poor dead goldfish that end up being flushed down toilets”.
Robyn Henderson
Robyn Henderson, from Christchurch, says: “I love my Resene wallpaper so much I used it in my ensuite and powder room.”
Will Dougherty

Marlene Leake
Marlene Leake, from Christchurch, says she always gets great compliments about her Panthera design wallpaper.
