Spare us the scented candles, chocolates and bath bombs this Mother’s Day: what we really need is a break.

Being a mother is tough. One day a year isn’t enough to give back all that Mums give out, but it’s a start.

And if you can find a present for the mother figure in your life that can provide some comfort, pleasure, or space throughout the year, you’ll help to remind them how appreciated they are year-round.

Whether they’re a plant mum, cat mum, new mum, seasoned mum, mum to be, or a beloved maternal figure, here are 10 gift ideas that will help to give them the time and space they really need to get through to next Mother’s Day

1. The gift of time

The best gift you could give a busy mum. Whether it’s a homemade voucher for uninterrupted podcast listening, bath taking or reality TV watching each week, a massage or movie voucher or tickets to a comedy show, choose something they love and make sure to help them actually take that time out. Even better, book it in for them.

2. Something personal

If the mother you’re buying for loves their fragrance, makeup or skincare, make it special by customising it – and help ensure the kids stop stealing it. Dior is offering free engraving on selected products until May 22. See dior.co.nz.

3. For foodie mums

Anything to give Mum a break from endless meal prep will be a win. Cook them an epic breakfast or dinner, buy a voucher for a meal service or make a booking at their favourite restaurant. A tasty hamper would also go down a treat – try Frances Nation Grocer’s Picnic Hamper, $79 from francesnation.co.nz (delivery nationwide, free for Christchurch residents) or Angel Delivery’s Mother’s Day Pamper Pack, $170, or Cake Box, $85, from angeldelivery.co.nz (delivery nationwide).

4. A practical, but nice, bag that won’t burst at the seams

From snacks to sweaters, toys to tissues, a mother’s bag is always bursting. May as well make it a stylish one, like July’s Everyday Tote, $145, small and $195, large, from july.com (with free personalisation for a limited time).

For a less practical purse on those kid-free outings, the Deadly Ponies Mr Minimese bag in Shearling, $569 from deadlyponies.com, is pretty cool.

5. A gift that gives throughout the year

A subscription is a great way to show Mum that they’re appreciated year-round. Subscribe to their favourite online news outlet, magazine or yoga class. Or try a Good Books subscription. The Wellington book store has an option to gift one book a month – with a bonus in the receiver’s birthday month. $225 for six months, $450 for 12 months, from goodbookshop.nz.

6. Sleep

If you’re gifting to a mum of young kids, sleep is probably top of their list of things they’d like more of. Why not schedule them a sleep-in, but make it luxe, with a piece from local label Moin. The new loungewear label is made locally using certified organic cotton. See moinbrand.com.

7. Physical memories

Print out some memories. Yes, photo gifts can be seriously cheesy, but in this day and age, printed photos are so rare, and scrolling through your phone gallery just doesn’t have the same appeal as flicking through an old-school family album. The first step is to actually take more photos of Mum with the kids and the second step is to print them, pop them in an album, frame them or make a photo book. Just don’t get them printed on a mug, please.

8. Silence (or near it)

Invest in some noise-cancelling headphones, because as much as we love our kids, sometimes we just want some peace and quiet. Both my mum and I swear by our Sony Wireless Noise Cancelling headphones and can attest to the sheer relief of putting them on and zoning out. From $436, visit sony.co.nz.

9. Help with a new hobbby

Why should kids have all the fun? Help mum pick up a new hobby, or reconnect with an old one. Hamilton store Found sells Modeletto’s Air Dry Clay Pottery Kit. The pack, $79.99, comes with everything you need to make a couple of pieces from home – no kilns or wheels required.

If they’re not the DIY type, but would appreciate a beautiful pot or vase, Found has a range of pieces from Matamata ceramicist Goodwin, priced from $29 to $49. Foundstore.co.nz.

10. Alone time

Book the babysitter, and schedule a night or weekend away – a hotel staycation, visit to an out-of-town friend or a favourite festival. Giving the kids to Grandma for the weekend is surely the perfect mother’s day gift for Gran too, right
