Traffic is backed up on State Highway 1 in Wellington after the southbound lanes were blocked on Thursday morning by an incident involving the Restore Passenger Rail protest group.
Delays on the road stretched back to the Ngauranga Gorge, Waka Kotahi said. But as of 8.15am, all but one lane – the left lane prior to the Terrace off-ramp – had reopened.

”Consider using an alternate route and allow extra time for your travels,” the traffic agency earlier said.
In a statement the Restore Passenger Rail group said it planned to hang a banner from an overheard signage gantry above SH1 near Bowen St.

On Tuesday, the group blocked State Highway 1 in Kilbirnie with a banner and one woman stuck herself to the road with a concrete-like substance.
The road was closed for about an hour, causing major traffic disruptions during rush hour.

Emergency crews are at the scene while the lanes remain closed.
Three people were arrested and charged with endangering transport, a police spokesperson said.
Two women aged 64 and 67 and a 19-year-old man appeared in Wellington District Court on Tuesday.
