A Stuff reporter on the scene said the Auckland District Court plunged into pitch black on Thursday morning.

A power cut has plunged the Auckland District Court into darkness.

A Stuff reporter on the scene said the Auckland District Court was suddenly pitch black on Thursday morning, prompting an evacuation.

Court staff asked court users and lawyers to evacuate in a calm manner.

Most used torches to see their way out safely.

A court spokesperson said contractors were on site and that the power could be out for up for an hour. She recommended court users phone 0800 COURTS for advice on their hearings.

A vector spokesperson said power had been cut, but had been restored to the area.

More to come.
