Lockie Ferguson will captain New Zealand in their three-game ODI series against Bangladesh later this month.

Dean Foxcroft is in line for an ODI debut against Bangladesh as the Black Caps will rest a string of first-choice players ahead of the World Cup.

The Otago batter, who made his T20 international debut for New Zealand versus the UAE last month, is part of a squad missing Tom Latham, Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner and Tim Southee.

Lockie Ferguson is set to captain the national side for the first time in the three-game ODI series in Dhaka before the Black Caps head to the World Cup in India.

Regular ODI captain Kane Williamson hasn’t been named in the squad as he strives to be fit for selection for the tournament, starting on October 5 when NZ meet defending champions England in Ahmedabad.

Mark Chapman and Jimmy Neesham both weren’t considered for selection because the tour coincides with the arrival of or shortly after the birth of their first children respectively.

Coach Gary Stead, who will also miss the series, said the busy nature of the touring schedule meant striking a balance was important.

Former New Zealand Cricket Players Association board chair Scott Weenink has been appointed as New Zealand Cricket’s chief executive.

“We have a very full schedule between now until the end of our tour to Pakistan in April including the World Cup and the start of the new World Test Championship cycle so trying to keep players and staff fresh and ready at the right times is paramount.”

“Balancing workloads also provides opportunities and it’s exciting to have different players in the group and learning in an environment like Bangladesh. It can be a challenging place to tour and getting used to different conditions quickly will be important over the next few months.”

Batting coach Luke Ronchi will lead the coaching group in Bangladesh as head coach.

New Zealand ODI squad for Bangladesh: Lockie Ferguson (captain), Finn Allen, Chad Bowes, Will Young, Tom Blundell, Dean Foxcroft, Henry Nicholls, Rachin Ravindra, Cole McConchie, Dane Cleaver, Kyle Jamieson, Adam Milne, Ish Sodhi, Blair Tickner, Trent Boult.
