BMW will indeed be offering the entry-level iX1 in New Zealand, with the model tipped to be priced underneath the $80,000 Clean Car Discount threshold.

The iX1 eDrive20 is the second electric model in the X1 family, using a single front-mounted electric motor to generate 150kW (on temporary overboost) and 271Nm of torque.

A 64.7kWh battery allows a WLTP-rated range of up to 470km, with DC charge rates up to 130kW possible.

Like the other iX1 models, the eDrive20 gets BMW’s latest interior, with a 10.25-inch information display and a second infotainment screen measuring 10.7 inches under a common glass surface curved towards the driver.

Final specifications and price are yet to be confirmed, but BMW has previously expressed interest in bringing in a sub-$80k model.

It wouldn’t be BMW’s first sub-$80k electric vehicle. The brand previously offered its quirky looking i3 hatchback for $74,300 several years ago before the model was phased out.

Supply had been an issue previously, along with New Zealand’s reputation as a market that favours BMW’s high-spec models.

However, if BMW can squeak the new iX1 under that Clean Car limit, it may see buoyed sales.

The iX1 eDrive20 will help push BMW’s EV sales even higher, with one in five vehicles sold from the brand currently powered by electricity. It is set to arrive in local showrooms in early 2024.
