Levin business,Trayla Trailers, manager Ben Hobbs said the offender had brazenly broken into their property.

A “brazen” break in at a Levin business comes after multiple attempts throughout the year to raid the company’s product, the manager said.

Trayla Trailers LTD manager, Ben Hobbs, said just this year they’ve “probably” had attempted break-ins every six weeks.

“We’ve had a multitude of padlocks, including our shipping container padlock cut and these are all different events … Yesterday was the one where they managed to obviously get through and actually take some product.”

It had got to the point where Hobbs was driving past the business on Tararua Rd on his days off just to check that nothing had happened while the business was unmanned.

He said he was just waiting for the “big” break in to happen.

And it did, at 10.30am on Sunday and in “broad daylight” and the offender was “as brazen as it gets,” Hobbs said.

CCTV footage shows the offender attaching the $11,000 trailer to their vehicle.

Video from CCTV footage shows the offender pulling up to the entrance gates and trying to cut his way through. When that doesn’t work, the person drives through the neighbouring property before ramming through the boundary iron fence.

The offender ended up taking an $11,000 trailer from the company, which he attached to his vehicle and left with.

Hobbs said they are questioning what they have to do to stop this from continuing to happen.

“If they’re now happy to turn up in broad daylight, with power tools, which we would assume would make one hell of a noise and do it in daylight, there’s not much more you can do.”

Trailers are valuable, Hobbs said and “easy to on sell”.

There’s nothing identifiable about Trayla’s trailers apart from a chassis number that the company puts on. If someone can get in and take one then they’ll make some money, Hobbs said.

Trayla’s is a family owned business started by Hobb’s parents and had been around for 25 years. The company had been at their Levin site for seven years now.

This isn’t the first time Trayla’s had been a target of theft.

In 2019, they had seven trailers stolen from them and “nothing came from that”, Hobbs said. Which is why they are now advertising, on Facebook, a financial reward for anyone who has any information on the offender.

“We’re sick of people being able to get away with it and nothing happening. So we’re certainly offering a reward for information leading to some sort of prosecution,” Hobbs said.

In a statement, police said they were informed about the burglary at 1.35pm on Sunday, August 6.

Police are still investigating the circumstances around the incident and enquiries are ongoing.
