An 11-year-old British girl has been shot dead in France over an apparent dispute between neighbours.

Her father was also critically injured in Saint-Herbot, a small village near Quimper in Brittany.

According to the BBC, local prosecutor Carine Halley said the reason for this tragedy was not yet known, but it appeared there had been a conflict between the neighbours for several years over a plot of land adjoining the two properties.

Marguerite Bleuzen, the mayor of Plonévez-du-Faou commune, told the BBC: “We knew the family well. There is a village fête every year and they always came.

“It is incomprehensible to have shot a child. No one can understand how that could have happened.”

The main suspect, a 71-year-old Dutch man who also lived in the village, is in custody, The Local France reported.

Neighbours told local media the girl had been playing outside on the swings on Saturday night (local time) when a man appeared with a gun and fired several shots into the garden.

Police said the family had lived in the Brittany village for about five years.

The UK’s Foreign Office said it was providing assistance to the family, according to the BBC.
