Napier was plunged into darkness Wednesday night in a power cut. The area of the outage according to Unison map.

A cat connecting with live electrical equipment caused an explosion that turned off the lights for much of Napier.

Unison reported an outage in Ahuriri, Bluff Hill, Hospital Hill, Napier Port, Napier South and Pandora.

The power went off at 7pm, and a spokesperson said 25,000 individual power connections were lost as a result of an outage at the Redclyffe Substation.

Transpower said on social media at 7.25pm that power had been restored to the substation but it “may take a little time to come back on at homes and businesses in the region”.

It apologised to the people who had been without power.

A spokesperson said the outage was “unfortunately caused by a cat connecting with live electrical equipment which caused an electrical flashover or explosion”.

About 54 megawatts of power was lost, which they said provided power to roughly 54,000 homes.
