A third alarm has been activated after a fire near Gore.

Crews from Southland are battling a fire involving a 4wd vehicle that has spread to nearby vegetation.

Fire and Emergency NZ shift manager Simon Lyford said several crews responded to a call at 5.30pm for a 4WD on fire in a paddock in the Knapdale area.

An appliance and tanker from Gore arrived at the scene and found the fire burning next to a large amount of steaming vegetation.

Lyford said a second alarm was transmitted, which pulled in further crews, as well as a rural specialist appliance and tanker.

A third alarm was activated and crews came from Gore, Riversdale, Hedgehope, Pukerau, Drummond, Tapanui and Wyndham.

Lyford said the fire was in three sections.

“They had one contained and were working on the other two.”

Some crews had been released while one tanker and one rural specialist appliance remained on site to dampen down the area, he said.

There were no injuries and the cause of the fire was unknown.
