Datacom has launched a new virtual learning platform which it hopes will encourage more youth, Māori and Pasifika to pursue careers in technology.

A new online tool aims to encourage more youth, Māori and Pasifika people to pursue a career in technology.

Tech giant Datacom unveiled the free virtual learning platform last month which will help users develop skills in cloud, automation, cyber and software development.

Māori and Pasifika are more interested in studying for careers in technology compared to the general population, according to research undertaken by Datacom. But despite this only 4% of the industry is Māori and less than 3% is Pasifika.

“Ensuring we provide pathways and opportunities for young Māori and Pacific people to find their way to a career in tech is incredibly important to us, as is ensuring we are doing our part to create a more diverse workforce in Aotearoa,” Datacom managing director Justin Gray said.

Gray said the virtual learning platform removes barriers like cost and time for young people interested in tech.

“An additional barrier it removes is for those who are shy, or don’t quite know how to make the first step, they can complete the modules at their own pace, and in an environment that works best for them,” he said.

“Our approach is really to create and support as many different pathways as possible for rangatahi.”

The platform is made up of series of modules designed to spark an interest in technology studies.

One module involves users working in a team to develop a new mobile app, and teaches them how to manage the project to ensure it’s delivered on time.

Datacom spokeswoman Siobhan Gallacher said she hopes school-leavers and new graduates will use the platform to build skills and make decisions about their career path.

Not all technology stops us from being active. Method Digital launched a new virtual reality game which will put New Zealand gaming on the world stage. (First published in January 2022.)

“Using engaging and innovative ways to attract and upskill talent as well as giving back to our communities is a key priority,” she said.

“This programme is a stepping stone for talent to join Datacom and build meaningful careers with us and across the sector.”
