An Ōamaru rest home operator has bought land in Pleasant Point and is considering the possibility of building a retirement village in the township.
Tim Blacker, operator of Northanjer and Southanjer rest homes in Ōamaru and a Waitaki district councillor, said he had bought a parcel of land, immediately adjacent to the Pleasant Point township, which was accessed off Burke Street.
“We plan to explore the feasibility of a village and care facility that would take up a small part of the overall parcel of land with the balance enhanced environmentally or left in agricultural production, so residents could enjoy the amenity of livestock and horticultural activities,” he said. “As part of the development it is intended that community access along the creek would be facilitated to somehow link up the existing walkway west of the site with the domain.”
Virginia Barlow, a director of VBA Limited, an Ōamaru design company, made a presentation on the proposed development at this month’s Pleasant Point Community Board meeting which showed plans incorporated townhouses, villas and a rest home.

Blackler said “high level demographic analysis” had shown a need at a district level for such a facility.
“Pleasant Point is a good fit for our overall objectives which are to explore developing a small village and care facility with a unique rural feel while also being proximal to additional services available in Timaru.”
It was too early to definitely say it would proceed, Blackler said.
“Further technical input and stakeholder engagement is required to determine the suitability and design aspects of the site and achieve better clarity in relation to demand which will drive decisions around the overall feasibility of the project.”
