Firefighters responded to a 20m by 20m slash fire that had got out of control in Redwood Valley, Tasman on Tuesday morning.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand responded to a 111 call at 11.24am that indicated a burn off had got out of control, shift manager Ryan Dawson said.

The Richmond volunteer fire brigade and the rural Appleby brigade were first on the scene and requested an additional tanker from Nelson station and another crew from Richmond.

Upon arrival at 11.42am, crews “encountered a 20 metres by 20 metres slash pile” and started work to extinguish it, Dawson said.

The fire had been contained by 12.10pm and there were currently two crews from Richmond and the rural Appleby crew still on scene going through the slash to make sure there were no hot spots left.
