Fire crews from Rangiora, Waikuku, Kaiapoi and Woodend are on the scene of a house fire that is well ablaze.

Around 40 firefighters are battling a house fire in Woodend, North Canterbury, that has been in flames for over an hour.

Fire crews from Rangiora and Woodend were called to the blaze just before 5pm on Friday.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Blair Walklin said they had to raise their second alarm and crews from Kaiapoi and Waikuku are in attendance as well.

“We do not know the cause of the fire yet and a fire investigator has been called,” he said.

St John is in attendance while firefighters work to extinguish the flames. Police are assisting with traffic.

More to come.
