Roquie is a Silky Terrier, and you can immediately see how the breed got its name.
A dog’s face is an arrangement of eyes, ears, muzzle and mouth. There are countless ways these features can come together, but what unites them is the miracle of fur.
I’m talking about a spectrum from velvety tailored fuzz that hugs a chiselled jaw, right through to explosions of hair through which no sense organs are visible. A dog’s facial fur – its length, colour, softness or coarseness – is a huge part of its identity, and one of the many reasons we love the species.
Today’s collection of readers’ photos brings facial fur to the fore. (If you protest that there are, in fact, a few hairless breeds of dog, I acknowledge the fact but apologise that my files currently feature only the more hirsute kinds.) Scroll and enjoy.
Ellie (left) has eyebrows that deserve a special award. Otis is a snout surrounded by an explosion.
Thanks to all for submitting photos. Please email me your own pet photos, or message me via the Four Legs Good Facebook page. Help keep Furry Friday free of embarrassing mistakes by remembering to include your pet’s name, and its sex if it’s not obvious!
Sweet and sunny: Teddy (left) and Spike are happily hairy.
Bumblebee (left) has a rune inscribed on his forehead, and the longer I look at it the more it looks like a dog. Floki is sympathetically barbered.
Duchess is a Wheaten Terrier, a breed known for its full, soft coat. When I first heard the words ‘Wheaten Terrier’ I thought the person was saying ‘wet interior’. True story.
I’m told that beautiful blonde Rudy is a goldendoodle. He has possibly the most beautiful nose of all today’s dogs.
Reorient your device to meet Finn (left, or right if you’re reoriented) and Fred. They’re both looking through the eyes of love when they look at you.
Spaniel ears are a miracle in themselves. Tilly’s scream to be stroked.
Nova’s face has an icing of experience. RIP Nova.
Koby rests his plush domed head.
Benji hangs out with his favourite family member.
This is the ‘before grooming’ photo of Jessie. The ‘after’ one appeared earlier this year, so I’m sorry you’ll have to either look it up or use your imagination!
Bella is a smooth customer – and a fervent tugger.
From this photo, you wouldn’t know that Nico (left) and Peppa don’t actually have a worry in the world. Which is as it should be.
Blondes have more fun, but sometimes they need a breather. This is Murphy in the sun.
Two Samoyed grins to improve your day: Newt and Annie. The mouths of this breed have naturally upturned corners, so smiling is compulsory.
Hairstyles of the small and cute: Jasper (left), Rosie and Tilly.
Both Princess Poppy (left) and Oreo have a broad blaze to add drama to their looks.
Wha? Wolfgang (left) and Ripley can’t believe what you just said.
Millie and Finn make sure you feel Looked At.
Serious players: The earnestness of Jock (left), Macy and Luca.
Mr Darcy (left) performs his neighbourhood watch (note the thoughtfully placed lambswool). Grizzled Mitch chills in his favourite place.
Angus is another who carries a rune on his forehead. Is it a mushroom cloud? Or the Tree of Guiltless Laziness?
James (left) is thoughtfully furrowed. Lyra discovers the sky.
Luigi the King Charles Cavalier Spaniel brought joy to his family through lockdowns and a separation. He’s a red healer.
Elfie (left), Lizzie and Frankie wonder what exactly you meant by that.
Tova (left), Dexter and Tonk didn’t think that joke was called for.
Winston (left) and Billie are young and hungry. Later they will be older, and still hungry.
Ivy (left) and Jasper dream of toys and chases.
Madigan (left) and Mr Guinness model hairstyles from the late 1970s.
Rune-headed Neeps (left) and tongue-swinging Sabi are looking for fun.
Coby brings a little Bichon, a touch of Chihuahua and a dash of Maltese to the party. Oh, and a taste for fun.
Riley looks back at his sniffly dad, who’s lying on the couch and thinking that it’s kind of a relief to be crook in the old, pre-covid way.
Nugget is as soft and comforting as the blanket she just stole from mum.
Finally, the gossamer softness of Wicket. He’s gathering his energy for the weekend – which is what Friday is all about.
