Gisborne residents have been asked to stop using water immediately as the region’s water plant has failed after Cyclone Gabrielle devastated the region.
The situation is described as critical.
The back-up plant on the Waipaoa River has crashed, meaning the area presently only has a limited amount left in its reservoir.
A state of emergency was declared for Tairāwhiti region on Monday morning and residents have been asked to conserve water for several days.
Tairāwhiti Civil Defence said there were multiple breaks in the water pipe supplying Gisborne city and it was not a quick fix.
“This is a significant crisis for our city. The only treated water we have now is the limited amount in the reservoirs.”
