Tony and Afsaneh Howey, of Viberi, won the global exporter award and the supreme award at the 2022 South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce Ara Business Excellence Awards.

A new category has been added to the region’s annual business awards, with nominations being sought for those who go “above and beyond to help others’’.

The South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards, will this year include a good sorts award, presented on August 18 at the Caroline Bay Hall.

Chamber chief executive Wendy Smith said the awards, sponsored by Fulton Hogan, would showcase the region’s “incredible businesses and NFP [not-for-profit] organisations, demonstrating why our three districts Timaru, Waimate and the Mackenzie are such great places to live and work’’.

It was the first year the Presbyterian Support South Canterbury Good Sorts Award would run, recognising an individual in the community who went above and beyond to help others, Smith said.

“It is someone who is making a difference in our community and working to improve our local community, workplaces, or homes,’’ she said.

“The Chamber encourages the community to nominate someone they know well who is really making a difference.’’

The criteria for entry included who the person was and what they were involved with, how the person was working to make a real difference to the lives of local people, what the impact of their work was, and their involvement and legacy for future generations.

“Although the entry process takes a little bit of thought and time, it is a worthy way to recognise some of our unsung heroes,’’ Smith said.

Further details on the Business Excellence Awards could be found on the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce’s website.

Businesses and NFPs were encouraged to enter the awards.

Entries closed on June 9, and there was a wide range of categories and special awards.

Last year the awards were held at Movie Max Digital Timaru across multiple events during the day, because of Covid-19 restrictions, but this year the event would return to the Caroline Bay Hall.
