Invercargill Airport has taken over management of the Milford Sound Piopiotahi Aerodrome from Chris Read of Airport Management Consultants Ltd.
“Milford Sound Piopiotahi Aerodrome plays a vital role in getting visitors to the jewel of Aotearoa’s tourism crown, the Milford Sound,” Te Manatū Waka Ministry of Transport manager of Economic Regulation Tom Forster said.
“We’d like to thank Chris for his incredibly hard work and dedication since he came on board in December 2017. He has made significant improvements to aerodrome operations, and operators have had a much better experience.”
Invercargill Airport operations manager Rob Somers said they brought considerable experience in operating aerodromes, including Invercargill and Manapouri Airports, and had been working with Te Manatū Waka for the past year preparing documentation and planning for the certification process.
“We’re thrilled to be formally on board and playing a vital role in such an incredibly important part of the economies of the Otago and Southland regions in general and Milford in particular.”
“We are looking forward to working closely with operators and users to take the experience of flying in and out of Milford to a new level. We can’t wait to get into it.”
Invercargill Airport will take on regulatory compliance, asset management and procurement and contracts for operational services at the aerodrome.
