When the world all gets a bit much, this is exactly the place you want to come and hide away, and every year plenty of people do. This quaint log cabin in Mt Lyford, Hurunui is not just the owner’s bolthole; it’s also an Airbnb listing that fetches $318 a night.
It’s picturesque credentials are easily seen in the photos taken by the vendor at different times of the year – there are some dramatic mid-winter shots of the cabin under a huge dump of snow. There are photos in autumn where the snow-covered mountains make a perfect backdrop, and then there’s the dog in front of the fireplace, the view from the kitchen sink, and the snow falling outside the open bathroom window.
All the elements are there, says Robyn Powell of Bayleys Hanmer Springs, who holds the listing. And although the property has been listed for just three weeks, she says there has been “huge interest”, mainly from South Islanders at this stage.

Picture postcard – this log cabin at Mt Lyford, Hurunui has come onto the market, with the owners sharing some of their favourite photos through the seasons.
The property, known on Airbnb as Copper Cabin, is a three-bedroom, 130m² house with an additional loft bed and sleeping nook, so it can accommodate up to 10 people.
The open-plan ground floor features a traditional log cabin construction, with matching ceiling timbers and exposed rafters. And the top floor has painted walls, again with exposed timber rafters. There is a second living area on the upper level, reached by a spiral timber staircase.
Other character features include the woodburner on a river-stone hearth, with corrugated steel lining behind the fire, open timber shelving in the kitchen, and a copper sink and matching bespoke rangehood.
On the exterior, the dormers are clad in timber shingles, and windows are positioned to maximise the views.

And here’s how the cabin looked after a particularly heavy dump of snow.
And, of course, because the outdoors is such a big part of the picture, there’s an outdoor shower and three outdoor bathtubs – all the better to view the spectacular dark sky. The showers and baths are heated with gas.
The house, at 86 Tinline Terrace, Lyford, Hurunui, Canterbury, comes with a large piece of land – 5514m². Bayleys has listed the property inviting enquiries over $760,000.
Other log cabins to features on Stuff recently include this large one at 79 Waikakaho Road, Tuamarina, which fetched $2 million in May 2023.
