Stuff
Swap the lingering wafts of pizza, wet dog and stale coffee for something more pleasing to the nose.
When it comes to cars, some smells do linger.
Maybe you open your car door to be greeted with an olfactory reminder of pizzas that were picked up last night, a coffee that spilt everywhere when a corner was taken too sharply or a vague must that appeared after you left a window cracked only for it to rain unexpectedly.
A car fragrance might not eliminate the source of the stench, but it’ll take the edge off. And while the classic pine tree freshener has a certain classic retro aesthetic to it, there are chicer options on offer now too – here are 10 to consider.

Ecoya strawberry spritz car diffuser, $30
A long-lasting summery scent of ripe strawberries offset with a lively spritz of pink grapefruit and passion fruit. Fruit salad, yummy yummy.
DedCool taunt air freshener, $20
DedCool is a functional fragrance brand expanding the realm of signature scents beyond glass bottles into otherwise mundane products and spaces. This hangable version of their Taunt EDP smells of spicy amber, warm vanilla and focus-pulling bergamot.
Kmart new car freshener can, $4
I associate this type of small tin with the smell of cat food or tuna, but Kmart reckon this can actually hold the smell of a brand-new car. For $4, I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Diptyque car diffuser with roses insert, $160
At the other end of the budget, we have this very luxe fragrance clip on from Parisian perfumery Diptyque. The handsome metal grill is adjustable, allowing you to control the intensity of the fragrance, or extract maximum longevity, so the scent lasts longer than an actual rose would.
Nola room spray in midnight, $30
This is technically a room spray, but a car is sort of just a room on wheels, no? The advantage of a spray is that it can be pulled out as needed basis, and is potentially less overwhelming. This one has a rich scent that incorporates orange, bergamot, lilac, vanilla and sandalwood.
Little Tree wild hemp air freshener, $5
Swap one dank smell for another. Is intentionally making your car smell like dry herb a bad idea? Probably, but so is trying to eat an extra saucy breakfast burrito while also driving to work. Don’t tell me how to live my life.
Glasshouse Fragrances scent discs, $17
Glasshouse Fragrances make disc versions of many of their evocative signature scents, which can be popped into their car diffusers for perfumery on the go.
DS & Durga Big Sur after rain auto fragrance, $23
Get the atmospheric joy of a picturesque road trip in the rain whatever the weather, with this hanging card designed to fill the air with the scent of the Highway 1 drive down the Californian coast.
Coca Cola air freshener, $10
A fun and kitschy option, without the stickiness of the real thing.
Jo Malone London peony and blush suede car diffuser cartridge, $72
Slide this cartridge into the case ($110) that attaches to your air conditioning vent. When the air con is on it pumps the luxurious floral scent throughout, turning your dunger into a fairytale carriage.
