Stellar Talauta from Palmerston North Girls’ High School won the Tangata Beats Award at the Manawatū regional heat.
Artists from Awatapu College and Palmerston North Girls’ High School impressed the most at this year’s Manawatū heats for the Smokefree Rockquest and Smokefree Tangata Beats competition.
The regional heat of the competition was at the Globe Theatre at the weekend. The programme, in its 36th year, is held nationwide with 21 regions from Whangarei to Invercargill, hosting thousands of young musicians every year.
Sunday’s Manawatū heat revealed the top solo/duo acts, who now have the chance to progress to the national final, as well as the top 12 bands chosen for the regional final on June 9.
The regional winner of Tangata Beats was announced, and the best-use-of-electronic-assistance award.

The top Manawatū solo/duo acts selected were Madeleine Cook from Awatapu College (first), and FreeBird from Waiopehu College (second).
The Tangata Beats Award went to Stellar Talauta from Girls’ High.
The best-use-of-electronic-assistance award was won by James Stent from Kāpiti College.
The top 12 bands to play off at the Manawatū regional final are: DAHLIA – Nga Tawa Diocesan School and Freyberg High School; Ruul 34 – Palmerston North Boys’ High School; Lucid – Feilding High School and Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu; Studio One – Palmerston North Girls’ High School; Misdirected – Ōtaki College; Tabula Rasa – Kāpiti College; Powercut – Ōtaki College; Torrent – Paraparaumu College; Grandmas Knitting Club – Waiopehu College; Epidemic – Palmerston North Boys’ High School and Awatapu College; and Obsolete – Paraparaumu College.
The Manawatū final is at the Globe Theatre tickets are $10 for school students or $20 for adults. Tickets are available on the door or at nz.patronbase.com.
At the Manawatū final there will be awards for the top three bands, the musicianship award, best song, best vocal, and lyrics award.
The top regional bands and solo/duos submit footage for selection as finalists to play off at the national final events.
The Rockquest national final will be at Auckland’s Q Theatre on September 16, following the Tangata Beats national final at the same venue on September 15.
