Passengers are waiting at Wellington Airport as a dense fog has cancelled the majority of flights in and out of the city.

Most planes arriving at the airport could not land because of the fog, Wellington Airport spokesperson Phil Rennie said.

However, some departing flights would be able to leave. Passengers were advised to check with their airlines directly.

MetService meteorologist April Clark said the fog was expected to clear during Tuesday morning as the wind switched to the north.

But there was a small chance the wind would not switch and the fog would remain through Tuesday.

The sea fog was caused by warm air, associated with the flooding around Auckland, coming over the cooler air of the Cook Strait, she said.

On the Wellington Airport website, flights that were due to arrive about 8am from Nelson, Auckland, Christchurch, and Hamilton had been cancelled, and others had been delayed to arrive about two hours after their initial planned time.

More to come.
