On today’s episode of Newsable: very, VERY expensive sneakers; World Cup whimsy; Congress v UFOs; Fun Fact Friday returns

Newsable is brought to you by BNZ.

One thing that never ceases to amaze me is the vast amounts of money people are willing to spend on collectors’ items.

Like, someone really went out and spent $32,000 on John Lennon’s molar. No kidding. A lock of Elvis’s hair went for £4,000.

Honestly. More dollars than sense, if you ask me.

In fact when you put it in context, the fact that Sotheby’s in London is selling a pair of white Nikes emblazoned with the OG Apple logo for $80,000 seems positively sensible.

Until it dawns that someone is probably gonna buy a pair of sneakers for $80,000. That’s not really that sensible, is it?

Still, it begs the question: how do auction houses actually go about valuing items like this? And what are some of the weirdest items they’ve sold at auction over the years? Well, fear not: Jess McKenzie from Webb’s in Auckland is here to chat about all that and more in today’s episode!

We also check in with former Football Fern Anna Green about the snowballing excitement as the World Cup continues to throw up twists and turns (she also sticks her neck out and gives us a prediction as to who’s going to win the whole thing).

Then there’s a bit of chat about the Very Serious Institution that is US Congress very seriously discussing the possible existence (and possible cover-up) of UFOs.

And you’ll be relieved to hear Fun Fact Friday returns – with a vengeance!

That’s your lot for today – we’ll catch you on Monday with a fresh ep. Have a great weekend, behave yourselves, and we’ll see you around.
