A brand-new episode of Newsable, hosted by Imogen Wells and Emile Donovan, drops each weekday morning.
Newsable is brought to you by BNZ. Listen to today’s episode in the player below.
Newsable is all about what everyone’s talking about. High brow, low brow, exclusives, analysis and hot takes – it’s a fresh way to get up to speed on the day’s big stories, delivered in a uniquely Stuff way – at 6am each weekday. Here’s what you need to know about today.
Kia ora! Welcome to Tuesday, which apparently is World Crunchy Taco Day. Do with that what you will.
There’s a lot in society that divides us. Politics. Religion. Sport. Whether or not you like feijoas. But one thing we can all unite around is that service fees attached to tickets to gigs SUCK. The Cure frontman Robert Smith is fighting back against them – but what’s the state of play when it comes to these mysterious charges in New Zealand?
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has released a new report and – wait, NO, STAY! – it’s actually very interesting. This one is a bit different: it combines eight years of research into a single document, and the language is approved by hundreds of governments around the world working in tandem. Our climate editor Eloise Gibson describes it as the report equivalent of the One Ring. Will it lead to meaningful action? Eloise joins us to ponder.
The meltdown of several banks and financial institutions in the US has caused ripples around the world – but paradoxically this could actually spell good news for mortgage-holders in Aotearoa. BNZ’s Mike Jones chats about how that all works, as well as why the price of gold is rising, and what he has in common with Gwyneth Paltrow.
And finally, the cup of tea and biscuit, that proud British pastime, may be an endangered species: biscuit sales are plummeting as the new generation turns to other snacks to enjoy alongside a nice wee Earl Gray (such as samosas. Nah, seriously. Samosas).
Let us know what your go-to tea accompaniment is by emailing newsable@stuff.co.nz – and if you have a recipe for especially tasty biscuits (or, indeed, samosas) flick that through too and we’ll give it a shot. We’re also running a poll on the Insta page, pitting the samosa against the digestive biscuit, a clash of heavyweights, so have your say, @newsablenz.
Have a great day and catch you tomorrow.
On the Stuff Agenda today:
