Newsreader Huw Edwards has been named by his wife as the British presenter facing allegations over payments for sexually explicit images, according to the BBC.

The BBC quoted a statement from Edwards’ wife Vicky Flind, who said her husband was “suffering mental health issues” and is receiving in-patient hospital care.

“In light of the recent reporting regarding the ‘BBC Presenter’ I am making this statement on behalf of my husband Huw Edwards, after what have been five extremely difficult days for our family,” the statement said.

“I am doing this primarily out of concern for his mental well-being and to protect our children.

“Huw is suffering from serious mental health issues. As is well documented, he has been treated for severe depression in recent years.”

Edwards, one of the BBC’s best-known presenters, was suspended by the broadcaster over allegations he gave a young person £35,000 (NZ$72,334), starting in 2020 when they were 17, for sexually explicit photos.

The corporation also said it was taking no further action against Edwards.

More to come.
