One dead following shooting in Palmerston North

A person has died at the scene of a shooting in Palmerston North.

Emergency services were called to Croydon Ave in Highbury after receiving reports of a firearm being discharged at a property just after 2.30pm on Sunday, a police spokesperson said.

“One person was found with critical injuries and died at the scene a short time later,” the spokesperson said.

A Stuff reporter at the scene said there were dozens of gang members from the Mongrel Mob lining the street watching on as officers worked at the scene.

Armed officers could be seen standing at a cordon between Brentwood Ave and Cowley Place in front of a blue tent in the driveway on one of the homes that appeared to be where the shooting took place.

A homicide investigation was launched and police were working to locate the offender who fled the scene.

Officers and the cordon will remain in place at the property while the scene examination was carried out, the spokesperson said.

“Police ask the public to avoid the area while staff work at the scene.”

An ambulance, a rapid response vehicle and an operations manager were sent to the scene, but a Hato Hone St John spokesperson was unable to comment further on the status of the patient.
