Part of State Highway 60 in Tasman District is now open to one lane traffic after an accident involving four cars on Friday morning, which left six people injured, one seriously.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Blair Walklin said they responded to the crash just after 7.20am on the Coastal Highway, SH60.

“We responded with appliances from Māpua and Richmond to a four car motor vehicle accident where all four cars ended up crashing into a nearby railing,” he said.

“No one was extracted from any vehicles, but a number of people were taken to hospital.”

A St John spokesperson said they assessed and treated six patients at the scene.

”One person was in a serious condition, two in a moderate condition, and three in a minor condition, all patients were transported to Nelson Hospital.”

A Waka Kotahi spokesperson said one lane of the highway between Māpua Drive and Aporo Rd has been reopened to traffic heading towards Motueka.

The other lane remains closed for traffic heading towards Māpua. Drivers heading in this direction must use local road detours.
