A person has been taken to hospital with critical injures after a car collided with them in Palmerston North.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident near the intersection of Tremaine Ave and Darren Lane just before 8pm on Tuesday.

Firefighters were called to the scene by Hato Hone St John to assist with first aid before they arrived, Fire and Emergency Central shift manager Carlos Dempsey said.

The pedestrian was critically injured and has been taken to Palmerston North Hospital, a police spokesperson said.

“Police are urging motorists to avoid the area while emergency services respond,” they said.

One person is assisting police with inquiries, they said.

Firefighters were assisting police with scene protection and cleaning up debris, Dempsey said.

A witness at the scene said the crash wasn’t visible from the road as it was behind the VTNZ at the Toll site.
