One person is understood to have died at the scene.
Emergency services have rushed to the scene of a crash between a vehicle and a pedestrian in south Auckland.
The pedestrian died at the scene of the crash on Frances St in Manurewa and a hearse could be seen pulling away at 9.30am, a Stuff reporter at the site of the accident said.
There were a number of fire trucks and police cars blocking the entrance to Frances St where groups of construction workers were standing around outside a building site, some of them visibly distressed.
A tarpaulin has been set up to cover the entrance to a steep driveway, where a van is stopped in the middle. The steel fencing was bent out of shape.
The few workers who remained after grieving family members were taken away said they couldn’t talk about what happened.
A woman was sobbing and being comforted by people around her.
Police said they were called to the incident involving a vehicle and pedestrian at 7.54am.
“As the situation is still unfolding, police will provide an update once we are in a position to do so,” they said.
St John sent one ambulance and two rapid response vehicles to the scene.
Three fire appliances were sent to assist police with a “rescue”, a Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson said.
