Fire crews from Rangiora, Waikuku, Kaiapoi and Woodend were on the scene of a house fire that is well ablaze.

One person has been taken to Christchurch hospital in a moderate condition after around 40 firefighters battled a house fire in Woodend, North Canterbury, that was in flames for over an hour.

Fire crews from Rangiora and Woodend were called to the blaze on Main North Rd, between Pa Rd and Sandhill Rd, just before 5pm on Friday.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand shift manager Blair Walklin said they had to raise their second alarm and crews from Kaiapoi and Waikuku came to assist.

“We do not know the cause of the fire yet and a fire investigator has been called,” he said.

St John was in attendance while firefighters worked to extinguish the flames and police assisting with traffic.
