A person has been taken to hospital in a critical condition after what police described as a “water-related’ incident at the Taiora QEII Recreation and Sport Centre in Christchurch.

The Christchurch City Council centre, in the suburb of New Brighton, has a range of water-based facilities, among them lap pools, a 130m hydroslide, and a leisure pool with a lazy river.

In an update to its website at 4.30pm the council said pool facilities at the centre were closed for the rest of the evening “due to unforeseen circumstances”.

A police spokesperson said police had helped with a water-related incident at Travis Rd, New Brighton about 4.15pm Tuesday.

“One person was transported to hospital in a critical condition,” the spokesperson said.
