A police employee who drunkenly smashed a supermarket window wasn’t charged.
At 2am on February 22, 2022, police were called to reports of a window being broken at a supermarket in Auckland’s Counties Manukau, according to the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
Police found the man responsible who was “intoxicated” nearby.
Despite being injured from the broken glass, he “resisted” police’s efforts to administer first aid, the IPCA said.
The man was also on sick leave waiting for a Covid-19 test result, which meant he breached the Ministry of Health guidelines in place at the time.
“The employee acknowledged responsibility for his actions.
“Police did not criminally charge the man and an employment process established the officer had breached their Code of Conduct,” the IPCA finding said.

Police response to the IPCA report on the policing of the occupation of Parliament in 2022
The IPCA said they were “satisfied” with police actions and the outcome.
When Stuff asked police what sanctions, if any, the man incurred, a police spokesperson said: “Within privacy rules we cannot disclose what the sanction was – employers have a responsibility for employees’ privacy”.
The spokesperson did not answer Stuff’s question about why the man was not criminally charged.
Relieving Counties Manukau District Commander, Inspector Matt Srhoj, added that police “place high expectations on all of our employees across the organisation”.
“Police conducted an employment investigation into the matter, which found the employee’s behaviour breached the Police Code of Conduct.
“The staff member was sanctioned and remains an employee of New Zealand Police,” Srhoj said.
